У статті авторами із застосуванням монографічного методу здійснено ретроспективний огляд тлумачень сутності поняття «інновація» вітчизняними науковцями. На підставі дослідження історичної еволюції дефініції категорії «інновація» зроблено висновок про доцільність дотримання дуалістичного підходу до ідентифікації сутності цього поняття, а саме одночасного розуміння інновації як: результату інноваційного процесу (новостворених або вдосконалених наукоємних технологій, способів господарювання/підприємництва, різних видів продукції, послуг, робіт); процесу, що охоплює дослідження, проєктування, розроблення, організацію виробництва й управління, комерціалізацію та поширення різних видів продукції, послуг, робіт, і передбачає отримання синергетичного ефекту від інтегральної взаємодії економічного, соціального, екологічного, науково-технічного та технологічного ефектів.
