Статтю присвячено дослідженню розвитку принципу змагальності у кримінальному процесі Української РСР. Еволюцію принципу змагальності у кримінальному процесі досліджено в історичній ретроспективі. Ретроспектива свідчить про те, що змагальність слід прийняти за основу організації всього кримінального процесу. Тільки в цьому разі можливий чіткий поділ функцій обвинувачення, захисту і вирішення кримінального провадження на всіх його стадіях, наділення сторін процесу рівними можливостями щодо надання доказів та відстоювання своїх позицій.
